SUU’s theater and dance department will present “42nd Street” April 13, 15, and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and April 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. in the Randall L. Jones Theatre in Cedar City. This American musical has music by Harry Warren and lyrics by Al Dubin with the book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble. It is based on the novel by Bradford Ropes, with original direction and dances by Gower Champion and was originally produced on Broadway by David Merrick. SUU’s production is directed by Lisa Quoresimo, with choreography by Kay Andersen, Brandon Grayson as music director, and New York-based Jeff Savers as guest music director.

“We have so many great tap dancers and singers among our students,” said Lisa Quoresimo, director of “42nd Street.” “On faculty we have the marvelous, magical Kay Andersen, who is capable of creating the most exciting, challenging choreography and also of bringing the students along to the point where they can master it. Mostly though, the sheer joy of musical theater, which is a huge theme in the show, is something every single one of these students brings into the room with them and that is making the show an absolute delight to work on and to watch!”

“This is a show about community and how a single, seemingly unimportant person can have a lasting positive effect on the lives of those around them,” said Ian Allred, a senior musical theater major from Scottsdale, Arizona. “It is also a celebration of musical theater itself, so if you love theater, tap dancing, comedies, or just overall being happy and enjoying yourself, this is right up your alley. As Julian so aptly observes in Act 2, ‘Musical comedy are the two most glorious words in the English language.’”

“My favorite part of the rehearsal process has been working with amazing mentors,” said Kenna Fullmer, a sophomore musical theater major from Salt Lake City. “I love them all and have learned so much from them in the short time that we’ve worked together.”

“This production has taught me that even in the depths of despair and when nothing is going right, we can find comfort in each other and help each other along to achieve all our goals,” said Lena Conaster, a junior at SUU from Layton. “It’s such a fun show. It is light hearted and triumphant, and I guarantee you will leave the theater feeling like ‘a raw beginner can be a winner’!”

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for alumni with card, and $7 for youth. SUU faculty, staff, and students can get in free with a valid ID card. Tickets can be purchased at the America First Event Center Box Office, at the door the night of the performance, or online at suu.edu/pva.
