Experience the Magic of Downtown Cedar City

Historic Downtown Cedar City during the holidays is a magical experience you won’t want to miss if you’re traveling through Southern Utah. Cedar City’s annual downtown lighting ceremony took place on Thanksgiving weekend and recently attracted several hundred residents and visitors to kick off the holiday season alongside thousands of dazzling lights, decorated Christmas trees, food trucks, live music, professional entertainment, and not to mention the arrival of Santa Claus by helicopter.

This year, one lucky child was selected to fly in with Santa on a helicopter, courtesy of SUU Aviation, after entering the “Fly with Santa” contest. It was a magical night for the entire community, with lights set to illuminate Historic Downtown through the upcoming holidays.

“The holidays are such a magical time for everyone,” stated Cedar City Mayor Garth O. Green. “We strive to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for everyone, whether you are a long-time resident, new resident, visiting for a moment during the holidays, or attending Southern Utah University (SUU) for a few years. We invite you to spend time with us and create lasting memories in our community!”

With a variety of businesses located in historic downtown and throughout Cedar City, there is so much to offer for your holiday shopping lists. You are bound to find something that catches your eye between jewelry, home décor, clothing, toys, and delicious food, treats, and beverages. Consider shopping locally, this holiday season by visiting www.visitcedarcity.com for a list of local shops and restaurants. Plan to stop by the two year-round Farmers Markets in town on Saturday mornings, one located downtown and the other in the IFA Country Store. And you won’t want to miss the dozens of dazzling holiday light displays in the area, with a map available on the Visit Cedar City website.

If you plan to stay awhile, check out the many concerts and events happening in the area, including The Piano Guys at Southern Utah University’s America’s First Event Center on Saturday, December 10th, the Orchestra of Southern Utah’s “Messiah” at the Heritage Theater on Sunday, December 11th or Monday, December 12th, and the Masters’ Singers Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 18th in the Heritage Theater to name a few.

Stop by the Frontier Homestead State Park during the month of December for plenty of fun for the entire family including opportunities to partake in holiday crafts and activities, or to gleam at the holiday light decorations.

Wrapping up the year in Cedar City, there is much to reflect on and look forward to in 2023. Cedar City continues to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually with its many events and festivals.

“Every year we continue to find new ways to bring the community together,” said Cedar City Events Director, Brooke Twitchell. “Many of our most popular events already have a date set for the new year and we encourage everyone to follow us on Facebook and Instagram or our City’s website to stay connected.”

With so much in store, Cedar City invites you to bundle up this winter and join us for traditions, memories, and festivities.
