The St. George Arts Commission and the Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah will co-host a very special event at The Electric Theater on Saturday, June 18th, at 7 PM. This wonderful event will celebrate the success of new public artworks in the city.

The evening will include a screening of the award-winning feature-length documentary, “Alice Street,” directed by Spencer Wilkinson. This thoughtful film follows muralists Desi Mundo and Pancho Peskador as they create a large public art piece in downtown Oakland. Subsequently, the film documents the effect the mural had on the community and how the art emboldened cultural groups to unite under the shared challenge of displacement.

“Alice Street” has screened at over 30 film festivals, including DocUtah, in 2021. The filmmakers behind “Alice Street ” have since held a series of screenings across the US that aim to empower art organizations, housing advocacy groups, and students. This special event will be held in conjunction with the film’s national impact campaign.

Following the screening, attendees will be treated to an insightful panel moderated by UTU film professor Patrick Smith. Attendees are greatly encouraged to be part of what is sure to be a very lively discussion. The panel will be comprised of art makers and champions of the arts, including Councilwoman Dannielle Larkin, AACF Board Chair Marrianne Hamilton, and “Alice Street” subject, Desi Mundo.

It should be noted that Mundo is the lead artist that conceptualized the mural featured on the side wall of the Electric Theater, the very venue serving as host to this event. Prior to this work, Mundo was a known collaborator on the mural featured at the St. George Art Museum. This accomplished muralist is excited to return to St. George and share a film about his art and advocacy work in Oakland.

Emily Reed, Community Arts & Exhibits Manager said, “The murals on the St. George Art Museum and the Electric Theater Center, created by the artists in this film, opened the floodgates for public art opportunities in downtown St. George. Every day, with each new project, the downtown Arts District becomes more vibrant and culturally significant thanks to the work of these artists and the art makers in this community.”

Given that nothing brings a community together quite like the arts, this is all the more reason to attend this free, all-ages event on Saturday, June 18th. Be sure to spread word!
