Intermountain Dixie Regional Medical Center Installs BLU-MED Intake Tent

Since Gov. Gary Herbert and other state officials announced the arrival of COVID-19 in Utah, hospitals across the state are beginning to ramp up preventive measures to combat the potential outbreak.

In a statement released last night by Terri Draper with Intermountain Healthcare here in southern Utah, “Thanks to community efforts, emergency department volumes at Intermountain Dixie Regional Medical Center remain average for this time of year. However, in an effort to remain prepared, today the hospital, working with the Southwest Utah Public Health Department and other community preparedness agencies, deployed the Utah Department of Health’s BLU-MED Tent. It is located near the emergency department in case it is needed in the future to extend ED capacity. This is a part of our community’s preparedness efforts and other hospitals across Utah are setting up similar ED extension preparedness tents now that Utah has had the first case of ‘community spread’ in Summit County. At this time, the tents are not being used.”

The University of Utah Hospital recently set up BLU-MED field hospital tents as well to test individuals without exposing the hospital’s staff or active patients and earlier last week, Intermountain Healthcare imposed new visitor restrictions, and MountainStar health rolled out a new screening process for patients and hospital visitors.

As reported yesterday in the Deseret News. Thirteen new Utah cases of coronavirus were reported Saturday, including a man who works at a Park City bar who came to work while symptomatic. Health officials said he is the first case of a community transmission of COVID-19 in Utah.
