“As a psychologist and human being, I believe our overall well being is enhanced by art in all its forms.” —Jane Blackwell

The Kayenta Arts Foundation is proud to announce its most recent board appointments. At the August meeting of the Kayenta Arts Foundation in Ivins, Dr. Jane Blackwell was elected the new chair of the board of directors and Rob Goodman the new vice chair, both of whom will serve one-year terms.

The Kayenta Arts Foundation operates within the community of Kayenta, but its mission is to become the go-to place where people from all over southern Utah can take part in diverse artistic expression in all its forms. The foundation serves as the governing organization for the Center for the Arts at Kayenta, a new performing arts venue for plays, musicals, community events, and concerts. The foundation also presents the annual Art in Kayenta Festival in October, a juried art show and festival that attracts over 6,000 art enthusiasts. The nonprofit organization also hosts the annual Street Painting Festival in April, a full weekend of professional street art, galleries, food, entertainment, and art students from many regional schools who compete for top awards.

Blackwell is a clinical psychologist who recently retired from her private practice in Salt Lake City. She was the founding director of medical psychology for Ogden’s St. Benedict’s Hospital as well as founding director of the eating disorders unit at Cottonwood and Wasatch Canyons Hospitals in Salt Lake City. Blackwell has taught undergraduate mental-health-related courses in the Northwest. She has served on numerous boards and in numerous leadership capacities, including for the Utah Psychological Association, Eating Disorders Awareness Week, the Rape Recovery Center in Salt Lake City, and most recently as the American Psychology Association’s public education coordinator for Utah. Jane’s life work of restoring positive mental health has solidified her belief that the arts feed the well being of society.

Director and producer of professional theater Rob Goodman founded First Stage, a professional Theatre for Young Audiences theater, which became one of the nation’s premiere theaters for young audiences and families. Goodman has directed over 60 productions, including 25 world premieres, and has worked with many acclaimed playwrights.

A retired member of Actors Equity Association and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, Goodman has held many leadership positions throughout his career, including vice president of Theatre for Young Audiences USA and board member of Tessitura Network.
