Kanab Arts Board presents library art show

The Kanab Arts Board will hold its inaugural library art show March 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kanab library. The exhibition will feature mixed-media artist Linda McCowan and students of Jennifer Andrews. The event is free and open to the public.

McCowan creates unique contemporary works from a variety of domestic objects. She says that at a distance, the textures in her work invite a viewer to step closer where the familiar is revealed— a table leg, old bottle, dinner plate, shredded clothes, rusty horse shoe—made into the whimsical and unexpected.

Born in New Zealand, McCowan earned a bachelor’s degree degree in Hawaii and currently resides in Kanab, not far from the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Inspired by her diverse cultural background, travel, and the ancient rock artists of the Southwest, she says, “No matter where I work or wander, creating art all ways brings me home.”  Her artworks are found in public and private collections.

“Visual scavenger hunts or time capsules, call what I do whatever you like,” McCowan said. “For me, my artwork is about freedom of expression. I hope my art inspires people to be brave. Libraries are sanctuaries, and I think it genius that our local library is now doubling as an art gallery. What an absolutely wonderful way to offer people a diverse art experience, while also supporting local artists in our community.”

Jennifer Andrews teaches yoga and works with groups that visit and volunteer at Best Friends Animal Society. She maintains Spirit Studios and served on the Kanab City Art Council from 2014 to 2016.
