As we gear up for fireworks, barbecues, and all the summer camaraderie that comes with the Fourth of July weekend, it is important to think about our furry friends. While we are busy celebrating America’s 250th birthday, our pets might feel a bit differently. Crowds, loud booms, and passing sirens can be quite overwhelming for them.
To give everyone peace of mind, Best Friends Animal Society is offering some wonderful tips to help keep your dogs and cats at ease. First, try to stay calm. Check when your local fireworks are scheduled and bring your pets indoors beforehand. You can set them up in a cozy room with closed windows and their favorite toys. Playing calming music or turning on the TV can also help muffle the noise.

It is also a good idea to keep things clean. If you are celebrating at home, make sure to clear away any firework debris promptly, as those chemicals can be harmful. Keep a close eye on your pets during backyard time and on walks after the holiday in case neighbors indulged in the celebrations.
When it comes to the cookout, try to hold the scraps. Many summer staples like avocados, grapes, onions, and ice cream are toxic to pets. If you really want to share a treat, try frozen watermelon chunks or blueberries instead. Also, double-check that your pet’s identification tags and microchips are current just in case they get startled and run off. Up-to-date information is key in helping the country achieve a no-kill status, where every healthy and treatable pet in a shelter is saved.

Finally, have your emergency contact information ready, including local vet clinics and shelters. And if you are looking for another reason to celebrate, all adoption fees at Best Friends locations are waived from June 22 through July 5 thanks to Warner Bros Discovery. You can visit the Best Friends website for more information on how we can work together to save them all.
