New lease would enable airport to install new fencing

By Rachel Carnahan

The Bureau of Land Management seeks public comment on proposed changes associated with the renewal of the Mesquite airport lease renewal. The minor changes, requested by the city of Mesquite, are necessary in order for the airport to replace existing fencing.

Although the airport itself sits in Nevada, portions of the airport safety zone sit just across the state line on public land in Mohave County, Arizona. The proposed lease changes pertain to those public land parcels in Arizona. The lease amendment consists of relinquishing 0.74 acre of leased public land in an area northeast of the airport (commonly referred to as the NAV AID site), which is no longer needed, and leasing an additional 0.76 acre of public land to the north and south of the current leased lands.

“One of the BLM’s top priorities is serving our local communities,” said Lorraine Christian, Arizona Strip Field Manager. “We believe the lease modifications, although minor in scope, will have major positive impacts for the airport and the thousands of people who fly into the area each year for business and recreation.”

As part of its decision making process, the Arizona Strip Field Office will consider public comments on the proposed Mesquite airport lease renewal and associated changes. Comments may be submitted by mail and email. The comment period ends July 13.

Written comments may be mailed to BLM Arizona Strip Assistant Field Manager Amanda Harrington, Arizona Strip Field Office, at 345 E. Riverside Dr., St. George, Utah 84790. Comments may also be faxed to Amanda Harrington at (435) 688-3258 or emailed to BLM_AZ_MesquiteAirportNORA@blm.gov. All comments will be made available to the public.

The Notice of Realty Action for Proposed Changes Associated with the Renewal of the Mesquite, Nevada Airport Lease was published in the Federal Register May 29.
