World-renowned pianist Mykola Suk performs Beethoven, Schubert at Kayenta

By Merrie Campbell-Lee

On rare occasions here in southern Utah, musicians of the highest caliber pay us a visit and bring us to soaring heights with their performances. The Center for the Arts at Kayenta is excited for its black box theater to be the new stage on which world-renowned artists can perform. And they are proud to bring to our local community the extraordinary pianist Mykola Suk, who will play Schubert’s Trout Quintet and Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto, accompanied by some of our area’s finest musicians, for one night only, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Suk, who’s often referred to as the greatest living Liszt pianist, is also revered for his ability to combine prodigious technique with exceptional musicality. American Record Guide has described his music as “an astonishing blend of muscular power, poetry and utter control. … He will prove to be one of the more formidable talents to have appeared in this country in years.”

Suk is accustomed to playing solos in large concert halls and with full orchestra accompaniment, so to entice him to perform in the more intimate Lorraine Boccardo Theater, Suk was offered the chance to present a concert that appealed to him personally, and it’s one he hopes will appeal equally to his audience.

Suk studied at the prestigious Kiev Specialized Music School and the Moscow Conservatory. He has performed in many of the world’s high-profile venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory. Before moving out west to teach at UNLV, Suk served on the faculties of the several distinguished music schools, including Kiev State Conservatory, Moscow State Conservatory, New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, and Columbia University.

Tickets are $30, or $10 for students with valid ID, and can be purchased at kayentaarts.com or by calling (435) 674-2787. Seats are selling quickly. Center for the Arts at Kayenta is located at 881 Coyote Gulch Ct. in Ivins.
