Letter to the editor: Northern Corridor? Just build a tunnelLetter to the editor: Northern Corridor? Just build a tunnel

In response to the recent opinion piece by Lisa Rutherford, “As the Northern Corridor looms, driving a wedge between recreationists and conservationists serves no good purpose”, I submit that there is a sensible solution that will satisfy all parties and interests, yet I have not yet heard it suggested.

It’s called a tunnel.

Having spent time in South Korea, a very mountainous country, I’ve seen how prolific tunnels are there, cutting through otherwise insurmountable obstacles to lay down an efficient roadway system.

The Red Cliffs National Conservation Area should be considered an insurmountable obstacle. Conservation areas are created for very good reason and should not be considered disposable. Building a tunnel from Santa Clara to I-15 would offer a shorter, more direct route than any of the proposals.

Most importantly, it would leave the protected ground above undisturbed. The recreationalists keep their Zone 6, the tortoises keep their Zone 3, and the road gets built, satisfying the county planners and especially delighting the companies contracted to build the tunnel as it will likely be their fattest payday ever.
