November Events at Kanab’s 14th Amazing Earthfest 2020

The nonprofit Amazing Earthfest, based in Kanab, celebrates land and life on the Colorado Plateau through its 14th annual festival of learning, discovery, and the arts. All activities are described at www.amazingearthfest.org. Register for free to attend the events you choose.

Amazing Earthfest delves into the climate crisis, perhaps the single most important issue of our time. Deepen your understanding with an important conversation recorded at the Post Carbon Institute and a TED Talk by the renowned climate scientist and woman of faith, Katharine Hayhoe.

How can we engage with people whose values, background, or interests we share, but who aren’t currently invested in tackling the climate emergency? In United by the Climate Crisis, we will explore ways to discover common ground with uncommon allies by sharing stories of introducing climate science to people who, on the surface, seemed too disinterested to engage.

How do you talk to someone who does not believe in climate change? In her inspiring, pragmatic TED talk, The Most Important Thing You Can Do To Fight Climate Change, Hayhoe shows how the key to having a real discussion is to connect over shared values like family, community, and religion — and to prompt people to realize that they already care.  “We can’t give in to despair,” she says.  “We have to go out and look for the hope we need to inspire us to act — and that hope begins with a conversation, today.”

After watching these online climate presentations, hop on Zoom at 7 PM Mountain Time for an Amazing Earthfest audience discussion of each on November 8th.

Kanab’s nonprofit Stellar Vista Observatory and the University of Utah South Physics Observatory collaborate with Amazing Earthfest to deliver two fascinating astronomy presentations beginning at 6 PM on Facebook.

Join us, Sunday, November 17th, for Deep Sky Imaging with Astrophotography, explores the night sky in ways that your eyes simply cannot. Using the University of Utah’s 32-inch high precision telescope atop 9,600-foot Frisco Peak in Utah’s West Desert at the Willard Eccles Observatory we’ll peer deep into the cosmos at selected objects, obtain images, and view details our own eyes never could. We will discuss the best amateur telescopes and cameras for viewing the night sky and taking photos right from home. This event will be rescheduled if the weather is cloudy.

Paul Ricketts, director of the South Physics Observatory (SPO) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy’s Interpretive Specialist in astronomy, delivers the programs.
