The Orchestra of Southern Utah’s 20th annual fall recital series continues with “Broadway Legacy,” an exhibition of songs made famous by musical theater. Directed by Suzanne Tegland, the recital begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theater on Sept 13. The recital is made possible by musicians who have generously donated their time and talent to benefit the orchestra and is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted.
Roslyn Greenhalgh and Halle and Jack Vickers will perform “For Good” from “Wicked.” The Vickers siblings have been lifelong friends with Greenhalgh and have been singing and performing music together for years. They have performed with the Utah Shakespeare Festival Playmakers.
Pianist Dr. Christian Bohnenstengel will accompany vocalist Vanessa Hunt for “A Way Back to Then.” Hunt is an active member of the Cedar Valley Community Theatre and has performed in two productions, “The King and I” and “The Wedding Singer.” She currently serves as the secretary for the Guild of the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Dr. Bohnenstengel holds a doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He currently teaches at Southern Utah University and has performed internationally. Bohnenstengel will also play “Fascinating Rhythm/Lady Be Good Medley” from “Lady Be Good.”
Pianist Trevor Walker will accompany vocalist Tamara Reber for “As if We Never Said Goodbye” from “Sunset Boulevard.” Reber teaches voice lessons and has performed in productions of “Guys and Dolls,” “The Wedding Singer,” “Cheaper by the Dozen,” and “Once Upon a Mattress.” Walker is a music teacher at Parowan High School. He and his wife, Cassie, are both theater lovers and are involved in the theater community.
Gillian and Savannah Jones will sing “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked,” and Gillian will also sing “Remember the Music,” a song featured on the television show “Empire.” The sisters love musical theater and both started performing at a young age. They currently participate with the Cedar Valley Community Theatre and have previously performed with the Parowan Community Theater.
Accidental 5 Brass Quintet will perform several popular pieces including music from “The Music Man,” “West Side Story,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Aladdin.” The ensemble started as a group of five SUU students and friends getting together to musically stay in shape during the summer of 2008. Over the years, it turned into a community group with members from Cedar High School, SUU, and the Cedar City area. The current lineup is Robert Carnesecca and Matthew Goms on trumpet, Debbie Nollan on horn, Christina Carrigan on trombone, and Aaron Templin on tuba.
There will be additional performances by Cassie and Trevor Walker, Heather Allen, and Noel Perry. Recitals continue every Tuesday in September. The OSU full orchestra concert season begins on Oct. 13. More information is available at myosu.org, by calling, (435) 233-8213, or by emailing osucedarcity@gmail.com.
