The Orchestra of Southern Utah begins its fall recital series, “A Legacy Begins,” with selections ranging from folk to jazz. The recital series begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theater on Sept. 6. The performance is directed by Melissa Leavitt and features musicians who have donated their time and talent to benefit the orchestra. The series is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted.

Common Ground, a vocal and instrumental group that enjoys sharing popular and folk music, will play two songs: “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song” by Jim Croce and “Star of County Down,” an Irish folk song. The group consists of Jim Howells and Des and Sara Penny.

The Red Hill Rangers comprising Steve Downs, Ben Fuller, Jennifer Paltrinari, and Monica Wood, will perform a medley of Bob Nolan songs including his two hits “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” and “Cool Water.”

“Bob Nolan is such a hero to me and he was a part of the beginning of the ‘Sons of the Pioneers’ and their history has become a legacy of Western Music through the years,” said Downs.

The Washburn Family Bluegrass Band — consisting of Emily and Paul Washburn and their sons William, Nathan, and Jacob — will play “Cluck Ol’ Hen,” which dates back as far as 1886; “Old Joe Clark,” an American folk song; and “The Battle of New Orleans” by Jimmy Driftwood. The boys range in age from 8 to 13 and have been playing music since they could hold their instruments.

Jazz group MB3 Quartet is pianist Christian Bohnenstengel, David Bolsover on saxophone, Trekker Burt on bass, and Manny Mosqueda on percussion. The group plays jazz, blues, standards, various Latin styles, and originals. They have played together since the fall of 2015, playing monthly at the Artisans Gallery on Center Street.

Nichole Roy will perform “Scarborough Fair,” an English folk song made famous by Simon and Garfunkel.

Village Voices, directed by Danny Hansen, concludes the evening. Founded in 2011, the chamber choir gathered to share their love for singing. In addition to a busy season of concerts, including opening for The Piano Guys this summer, the choir contributes many hours to the arts scene of southern Utah.

Recitals continue every Tuesday in September. Sponsors are always welcome. The OSU full orchestra concert season begins on Oct. 13. More information is available at myosu.org or by contacting the Orchestra of Southern Utah at (435) 233-8213 or osucedarcity@gmail.com.
