PHOTO GALLERY: I-15 in Nevada partially open as repair efforts continue; detour to Las Vegas

Written by Jeremy Crawford

After heavy rains and flooding closed sections of Interstate-15 through the Virgin River Gorge and south of Mesquite Monday evening, some portions have reopened this afternoon.

I-15 is now open southbound until Exit 93 in Logandale, Nev. From there, drivers must take state Route 169, pass through Overton, and then turn onto the Valley of Fire Highway. Drivers will then be taken to the Paiute reservation, where they can continue on to Las Vegas.

The detour is 43 miles long and is expected to take 1 hour, 6 minutes under normal traffic conditions. The portion of I-15 it substitutes is approximately 18 miles long. For a detailed map of the route, click here.

Nevada Highway Patrol public information officer Loy Hixson said that officials do not have a date set on when the rest of I-15 will reopen. They are looking at the portions of the road that have been completely washed away, where not only is the road missing but the ground underneath is unstable. Drivers are asked to choose an alternate route or stay and enjoy the area they are in for a little while longer

Be advised that there is still some standing water along sections of I-15 on the shoulders and they may be soft if you need to pull over. Also, many large semi trucks are parked on the shoulders as they wait for directions and alternate routes. If travel can be avoided, the public is encouraged to do so until the roadways have been reopened and cleared.
