New Years Resolutions

– By Josh Warburton –

Every year around this time, I usually write up a list of goals and resolutions. Generally, by the end of January, I’ve forgotten all about them, and another year will roll by, with the only things being accomplished being the ones that happened mostly by chance. Last year, I actually wrote out a shorter list of goals and also a sub-list of steps along that path to get me there. Did that help? Nope. The list stayed in the same folder as all the prior year’s lists and I’m not even sure where that folder is at the moment, having moved things around at home while reworking our spare room into a new multi-purpose office.

So, what would be a better approach? Well, I wish I had the answer. I’ve read about folks trying to make shorter lists of more attainable goals, but what fun is that?! “Dream big” I like to say! But having “Buy a Tesla” on my list every year for nearly 10 years is probably not really “fun” either. So, in doing a little research online I found a few ideas that might help me, and maybe you, to keep your resolutions this year.

Here are some suggestions I found:

  • Set SMART goals. Your goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Overambitious goals can lead to frustration and abandonment of your resolution.
  • Start small. Don’t try to change everything all at once. Set small, achievable goals that you can build on over time.
  • Write goals down and make them public. Tell your friends and family about your goals so that you have accountability.
  • Visualize your goals. Picture yourself achieving your goals and what it will feel like.
  • Create a plan and break down your goals into smaller steps. This will make them seem less daunting and more achievable.
  • Set deadlines for yourself. This will help you stay on track and motivated.
  • Track Your Progress. Regularly monitor your progress. This can be motivating and help you adjust your plan if needed.
  • Reward yourself for your progress. This will help you stay motivated and on track.

Don’t give up. If you fall off track, don’t give up. Just pick yourself up and start again.

  • Be flexible. Things don’t always go according to plan, so be flexible and adjust your goals as needed.
  • Find Support. Share your resolutions with friends or family members who can offer support, encouragement, and accountability.
  • Learn from setbacks. If you experience a setback, use it as a learning opportunity. Understand what went wrong and how you can prevent it in the future.
  • Stay Positive. Keep a positive attitude towards your resolutions. Self-encouragement and optimism can be powerful tools in maintaining your commitment.

In summary, really, this is an article for myself, but if it helps you or anyone reading this do a bit better this year, then that’s just a fantastic byproduct. Above all, enjoy yourself in the new year, and have fun because life is short! Happy reading.
