Sears Art Museum Showcases the World of Abstract Art

From September 15th until November 10th, the Sears Art Museum, a part of Utah Tech University, presents its latest exclusive exhibition, The Abstract Impulse. The exhibition offers viewers a bridge across time, connecting ancient cave wall paintings, the intricate designs of Native American pottery, and the contemporary canvases that grace modern galleries. It stands as a testament to humanity’s innate urge to explore and interact with the mysteries of existence through artistic exploration.

Curated by James Peck, Director and Curator of the Sears Art Museum, this exhibition offers a journey through the realm of abstract art. Peck has carefully chosen outstanding examples of abstract art from the museum’s extensive archive, encompassing nationally recognized artists as well as those closely associated with the Utah region. Complementing these selections are exceptional works contributed by prominent contemporary artists working in Southern Utah – Colleen Gianatiempo, Andrew Kosorok, and G.K. Reiser – creating a unique opportunity to witness something truly extraordinary.

In the Delores Doré Eccles Fine Arts Center Grand Foyer, the spotlight falls on Dennis Martinez, a cherished and longstanding art professor at Utah Tech. Martinez’s creative process takes center stage in six expansive new artworks in which he seamlessly blends painting, mixed media, and collage techniques with elements of abstraction, expressionism, and modern experimentation. Martinez shares, “My aspiration is for each viewer to depart with a personalized understanding and appreciation for the diverse spectrum encompassed by abstraction.”

Adding a touch of artistic legacy to the event is a loan from the Harry Bertoia Foundation – an impressive abstract painting that commands attention. A celebrated Modern American artist, Harry Bertoia left an indelible mark across sculpture, furniture design, and sound art. This loan unveils a lesser-known aspect of his multifaceted creativity: his abstract and surrealist-inspired prints and paintings.

The grand opening of the exhibition is set for Friday, September 15th, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. This open-to-all event promises not just a visual feast but also an intellectual one, as featured artist Dennis Martinez takes the stage for an insightful talk. Guests can also indulge in light refreshments. For further details about the Sears Art Museum at Utah Tech University, please visit www.searart.com.
