DSU hosts Southern Utah Clean Air Forum

By Jean Lown

The Southern Utah Clean Air Forum — Legislation for a Better Future will take place Jan. 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Boeing Auditorium in the Hazy Building at DSU. The forum will focus on proposed federal and state legislation and a local Washington County resolution that will have lasting effects on Washington County residents, area businesses, and economic development in southern Utah. These measures aim to improve air quality, promote clean energy, and mitigate the health, economic, and security impacts of energy emissions. The forum will be informal and will offer the opportunity for questions and discussion between the public and local political leaders.

Dr. Yoram Bauman and Tom Moyer will discuss tax modifications based on the 2018 proposed Utah House Bill 403, adding a tax on energy emissions in exchange for removing taxes on items such as groceries and social security income and investing in clean air and rural economies.

Bauman has a Ph.D. in environmental economics and is a leader of carbon tax legislation, an author, and a comedian — the world’s first and only stand-up economist. His goals are to spread joy to the world through economics comedy, reform economics education, and implement carbon pricing.

Tom Moyer is the leader of Climate Utah, the state effort associated with the Citizens Climate Lobby’s federal focus, a driving force behind the 2018 Utah Resolution on Emissions Reduction and tax modification bill.

Bill Barron will present proposed federal legislation H.R. 7173 and S. 3791, Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend, a bipartisan bill implementing a revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend and assessing a fee on carbon fuels, returning the proceeds to citizens as a dividend. A former small business owner and Alta ski patroller and marshal, Barron has advocated action on climate with the Citizens Climate Lobby since 2010, attracted by its nonpartisan, positive approach and citizen engagement. He campaigned for federal office as a “climate candidate and ” founded Utah’s first Citizens Climate Lobby chapter and is now its Mountain West regional coordinator.

Sarah Thomas will provide information on a Resolution for the City and County Governments of Washington County, resolving to determine ways to reduce emissions and implement clean energy solutions locally.

Thomas is the public lands program manager for Conserve Southwest Utah, a member of Citizens Climate Lobby, and a citizen interested in taking action for clean energy.

Tom Butine will moderate the forum. Contact him for further details at tdbutine@hotmail.com or (425) 893-9781.
