St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site hosts week of activities

By Diana Azevedo

Join us in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site with a week of activities, beginning with honoring our past Feb. 25 and culminating in a fundraising event focused on our future Feb. 29. Three events are free, two are included with regular admission rates, and one is ticketed.

On Feb. 25, an evening kickoff event will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. View a slideshow of the discovery site from the early 2000s to the building being built and the major building projects since 2010. Then enjoy a sneak peek of our final version of the new introductory video and enjoy a tour by our longest serving volunteer and current foundation board chair Gary Watts. Light refreshments will be served, and participants will receive free admission.

On Feb. 26, admission to the museum is free. If you haven’t been here in a while, come check out the new exhibits and projects we’ve completed. Cookies will be served at 3 p.m., and at 4 p.m. there will be a dinosaur pinata. Check out the fun frames for selfies and a filter for Snapchat users.

On Feb. 27, the museum will stay open until 7 p.m. Get a behind-the-scenes tour of the fossil prep lab, and participate in the play dough sculpting contest. Winners receive a yearly membership pass. Both the prep lab tour and play dough are included with regular admission rates.

On Feb. 28, kids’ educational activities will start at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. The activities are included with regular admission and will be held in the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site’s classroom.

The science lectures will be held at DSU’s Dunford Auditorium beginning at 5 p.m. and are free to the public. Speakers include Dr. Jim Kirkland, Dr. Martin Lockley, Dr. Adam Marsh, and Dr. Alan Titus.

Feb. 29 is an adults-only event where we will be unveiling the future plans for the Dinosaur Discovery Site and an upcoming exhibit. Hear live music by Nickelpeak along with a DJ giving away coupons from all over town. Try the specially made “Aleosaurus” blonde ale by Zion Brewery and wings and BBQ sliders by Dubs. Bid at the silent auction. All proceeds benefit the museum. Tickets are $25 per person.
