SUMA celebrates summer with Family Days, Create Playdates, and birthday bash

Families looking to spend time together this summer can join in on the many free activities at the Southern Utah Museum of Art. During Family Days June 16 and Aug. 18, families can drop in between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Create Playdates, an activity for preschool children ages 3 to 5 and accompanied by an adult will take place June 19, July 31, and Aug. 21 at 11 a.m. The SUMA Birthday Bash July 7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. will feature sculpture activities in honor of SUMA’s second anniversary and the opening of a James Surls exhibit. All activities are free and open to the public.

After providing many opportunities this past year for families to create together, Family Days will bring more kid-friendly activities tied to SUMA’s summer exhibitions. On June 16, families can create their own watercolor landscapes inspired by a George Smith Dibble exhibition on display through June 30. For the Aug. 18 activity, families can experiment with monoprints, a form of printmaking that has lines or images that can only be printed one time. Families can find ideas for their designs when exploring the Surls exhibition.

Preschool children can experience art with a parent or guardian during Create Playdates, a program featuring story time and related activities. Selected books include “Meet Me at the Museum” by David Goldin June 19, “A Line Can Be” by Laura Ljungkvist July 31, and “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt Aug. 21. After story time, children can participate in hands-on activities inspired by the book.

To celebrate the opening of the Surls exhibit and SUMA’s second anniversary, activities for the whole family will take place July 7. These activities include a make-and-take activity and a collaborative sculpture. Families can also enjoy live music, eat birthday cake, and learn about the new Friends of SUMA Families membership and mascot.

Spend time with your family this summer with free family activities at the Southern Utah Museum of Art. More details on Family Programs can be found online. For more information, please visit suu.edu/suma, call (435) 586-5432, or email experiencesuma@suu.edu.
