SUU Orchestra, Choirs perform Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”
By Ashley H Pollock
The SUU Orchestra and Choir will perform the oratorio “Elijah” by Felix Mendelssohn March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theater.
“This concert will feature all SUU choir members with featured student soloists and our SUU orchestra combined,” said Dr. Krystal McCoy, director of choirs at SUU. “I am very excited to delve into this monumental oratorio with the students. Both orchestra and choir are enjoying rehearsals and looking forward to bringing the work to life. It is rare for undergraduate musicians to accomplish such a feat together.”
The choirs at SUU are home to music majors and to students from a variety of other disciplines from across campus, all of whom share a common goal of making great music and performing at their very best. The SUU Orchestra, comprised of student instrumentalists from SUU’s campus, rehearses four hours each week during the semester and performs at least twice each semester.
“I have enjoyed the opportunity to prepare solo works from this major oratorio,” said Samuel Park, junior music major with an emphasis in vocal performance from Safford, Arizona. “This experience has shown me how much I love performing classical works and singing the oratorio style. By preparing for this concert, I have learned to focus my attention on the importance of time management and effective practice sessions.”
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth. Southern Utah University faculty, staff, and students are free with a valid ID card. Faculty and staff IDs are allowed one guest. Tickets can be purchased at the door the night of the concert or online at suu.edu/pva.
