SUU presents Continuum Student Dance Concert

Students from SUU’s theater and dance department will perform in the Continuum Student Dance Concert Nov. 22, 23, and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. in the Randall L. Jones Theater.

“Continuum is the result of blood, sweat, and tears from each choreographer and their dancers,” said Bailey Nigh, SUU student choreographer. “Throughout the process, we’ve supported each other in the making of costumes, lighting design, and dancing in each other’s pieces. Producing each dance is more than placing steps together and then showing up to the theater. Each choreographer has put in countless hours towards creating a polished work. Continuum is not just a stepping-stone in our dancing careers. These pieces are polished works from artists within the student body.”

“This was an experimental process for me. This was my first opportunity to be a student choreographer and to create movement in a modern style. Empathy is something that I personally value and I am so intrigued about the trade off of burden and celebration when an individual makes the choice to share in the experience of another,” said Kylie Park, an SUU dance student and choreographer. “My choreographic approach was influenced by the idea of individuals in separate bodies having the same kinesthetic experience in the same space at the same time. This physical perspective only deepened my appreciation for willing and visceral experiences of empathy.”

“We have worked tirelessly to put this show on, creating our own costumes, lighting, and being a part of the crew to prepare the stage for the show,” said Kayla Nelson, a SUU dance student. “Each of us has our own individual aesthetic and choreographic process, which is what makes this show unique and diverse.”

SUU is accredited by the National Association of School of Dance and offers a diverse curriculum of classes and laboratory experiences for dance majors. The SUU dance department employs both nationally- and internationally-renowned faculty members who are dedicated to sharing their skills and experiences to prepare students for future careers.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for alumni with card, and $5 for youth. SUU faculty, staff, and students can get in free with a valid ID card. Tickets can be purchased at the America’s First Event Center Box Office, at the door the night of the performance, or online at suu.edu/pva.
