Theme revelation for Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge draws near

Southern Utah’s Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge has been going strong since 2005, and it all started with Horror-Fest! The challenge is simple: This creative platform gives storytellers of all ages and skillsets an opportunity to put together a five-minute short film in a limited amount of time using any resources available to them.

Presented by The Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah, this challenge requires that you follow a set of rules and guidelines, the big one being the utilization of a given theme. That theme will be revealed Sept. 13 at the Southern Utah’s Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge Facebook page. Be sure to act quickly on that day, because only 25 filmmaking teams can sign up to take part in the challenge. No clue as to what the theme will be, but you can bet that it will be appropriate for Halloween.

Even though you can’t start shooting your film until Sept. 13, there’s no reason you can’t start formulating a game plan and putting together a story concept in your head so that you’re ready to jump in right when the theme and guidelines go live. It should also be noted that this is not a 48-hour filmmaking challenge. Storytellers will have until Oct. 14 to submit their projects. You’ll have nearly a month, which can prove to be either a blessing or a curse depending on how you choose to use that time.

On a final note, all completed Guerilla Shorts will be presented on the big screen in a theatrical setting Oct. 26 during FMASU’s big annual Horror-Fest Spooktacular! There will be cash prizes awarded to the strongest films of the bunch. Expect plenty of surprises throughout the evening as well.

Whether you’ve made a short film before or not, come on out and take part in this wonderfully creative experience.

Adam Mast
Adam Mast's love affair with the movies began at the ripe age of 6 after his parents took him to see a little film called Jaws at a drive-in theater in Northern California. From that moment, he was hooked. Mast began his epic stint as a film critic with The Independent back in May of 1996. At the time, the publication was still in its infancy and known as the Revolution. Through the years, Mast would go on to write for Zboneman.com before co-founding the entertainment site, Cinemast.net. His love of storytelling would also lead him to aid in the creation of the film-centric 501(C)(3) nonprofit, Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah (FMASU)--An organization primarily known for championing storytellers both locally and worldwide by way of various film-related events held throughout the year, including The Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge, Desertscape International Film Festival, HorrorFest International, and A Merry Movie Christmas. His love of cinema and the arts in general knows no bounds. Mast currently resides in St. George, UT with his lovely (and undeniably supportive) wife Tonja and their four amazing children, McKenzie, Matthew, McKian, and Mason.
