Organized by the Utah Tech University Foundation, the black-tie evening highlights what happens when a community invests directly in its students. Over the past two decades, the event has helped provide $1.9 million in scholarships to more than 1,000 students who may not otherwise have been able to pursue a college education.

Community at the Center
Fire & Ice is designed as more than a fundraiser. It’s a demonstration of Southern Utah’s commitment to expanding access to higher education and helping students overcome financial barriers as they work toward earning degrees and preparing for the future.
This year’s honorary community co-chairs reflect that spirit of giving. Alma and Melissa Jeppson, new to the area and dedicated to giving back, are serving alongside Brandon and Becky Staples, owners of Sun American Mortgage Company and Utah Tech alumni and supporters.
The Staples shared that scholarships “really do change what’s possible for students,” noting they were both scholarship recipients and saw firsthand how removing financial barriers can change the direction of a life.
The Jeppsons echoed that sentiment, calling education “an investment in people, in our community and ultimately a chance to improve someone’s future.”
An Evening of Elegance and Talent
The gala begins at 5:30 PM with a social hour on Palm Street before moving inside the M. Anthony Burns Arena for dinner and entertainment. Both portions of the evening will feature performances from more than 45 students, primarily from Utah Tech’s College of Arts, under the guidance of a dozen faculty members and Dean Jeff Jarvis.
Shane B. Smeed and First Lady Angela Smeed are also closely involved, with the first lady providing vision and direction for the event while overseeing many of the design elements that shape the gala experience.
Founded by community members Marica Wade and Dorothy Orton, Fire & Ice also celebrates their legacy of “paying it forward” through direct support of students via the Marcia Wade and Dorothy Orton Pay It Forward Scholarship.
Supporting Students, Together
The Fire & Ice Scholarship Gala continues to serve as a powerful reminder that education is a community effort.
