It’s road trip season and Best Friend’s Animal Sanctuary is welcoming volunteers and visitors to its gorgeous Southern Utah location, where there are more than 1,700 dogs, cats, bunnies, goats, pigs, horses, birds, and wildlife being cared for every day.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is the headquarters and heart of Best Friends Animal Society, a national, non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to making America a no-kill country by 2025. Set in Kanab, Utah, the Sanctuary is a unique 3,000-acre destination for animal lovers from across America as well as international tourists.

The Sanctuary offers a free, family-friendly vacation experience where visitors can learn about the animals that live there and Best Friends’ lifesaving work across the country. There’s also a $5 vegan lunch served daily at the Village Café, which has an incredible view of the beautiful canyon landscape.

Visiting the sanctuary can be part of a complete Best Friends voluntourism experience offering guided tours, hands-on volunteering opportunities, and the ultimate in pet-friendly lodging at Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile (where guests can take a complimentary shuttle to the Sanctuary). There are several lodging options – from RV parking to cabins to cottages – also available on-site at the Sanctuary.

By signing up in advance at www.bestfriends.org, volunteers can immerse themselves in hands-on experiences working with their favorite species by helping with cleaning, walking, feeding, socialization and more. Children as young as 8 can also volunteer with parents or adult guardians in some locations. Visitors are also welcomed to explore the grounds, including hiking trails and Angels Rest, a peaceful memorial area dedicated to beloved pets that have passed. With its unique amenities and location, Best Friends makes an ideal staging area for trips to other national wonders such as Zion National Park, Grand Staircase Escalante National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. The town of Kanab also has a storied history as a backdrop for dozens of Western movies and includes a Western Walk of Fame, as well as restaurants, gift shops, galleries, and much more.
