The history and beauty of Kanab will be celebrated at the annual Jacob Hamblin Days Festival June 15 and 16. Named after one of southern Utah’s early and most influential settlers, Jacob Hamblin Days comes alive with rodeos, horse trail rides, hiking, and an educational seminar.

Jacob Hamblin helped make life in southern Utah possible by improving relations between early pioneer settlers and the Native Americans in the area. A friend to the natives, Hamblin eased tensions between them and white settlers.

The event also offers visitors the opportunity to visit the Kanab Heritage House and the Kanab Heritage Museum.

Commissioned to be built by Henry Bowman, a school teacher in Kanab who also opened the Bowman and Co. mercantile, the Kanab Heritage House was completed in 1894. The Heritage House was home to three prominent Kanab families before being preserved by the City of Kanab as a historical museum.

One of the things that make the home unique is that it is completely furnished with period furniture, much of it original to the house as it was furnished by the Bowmans. The architecture and trim work are true to the Victorian era but also contains symbolism that was important to the pioneers.

The Kanab Heritage Museum was built in 1939 and 1940. It originally served as the city’s library. The museum follows the lives of a dedicated and hearty community through generations of photos, artifacts, and stories. The tour takes you into the “Little Hollywood” movie era when Kanab hosted the biggest movie stars and locals participated in filming as extras and livestock handlers.
