Statewide Initiative “Flip Blitz” To Replace Grass Launches Today Throughout Utah

Washington County leads the way with more than 100,000 square feet of grass to be removed for Flip Blitz, a statewide landscape conversion event that replaces grass with water-efficient landscaping. More than 250 volunteers will be working on 10 projects throughout the county. Participants include the cities of St. George, Washington, Santa Clara, Ivins, Hurricane, Toquerville, and the Washington County Water Conservancy District (WCWCD). Each participant is funding their own project.

Park strips and other grassy areas can be hard to water efficiently, and often result in wet sidewalks and wasted water. Gov. Spencer Cox identified landscape diversification as one of his four key water conservation measures, and Flip Blitz is in line with that guidance.

Locations Removing Grass Include:

  • Sunbrook in St George
  • Washington City Cemetery and Nisson Park in Washington
  • Unity Park in Ivins
  • Gubler Park in Santa Clara
  • Hurricane City Hall
  • Toquerville City Hall
  •  Three residences in Sun River

“We have three conservancy districts, eight residential properties, 11 cities, one NGO, and three businesses as partners this year,” said Josh Zimmerman, Utah Division of Water Resources Water Conservation Coordinator. “Our community partners understand that by converting their park strips to a water-wise design they can improve their curb appeal while saving huge amounts of water, and we’re excited about the opportunity to raise awareness about it.”

This program relies heavily on volunteers to administer it.
