Zion Canyon Earth Day celebration promotes solar power in southern Utah

By Toni Benevento

The town of Springdale, in cooperation with Zion National Park, will celebrate the 14th annual Zion Canyon Earth Day April 21. This event draws over 1,000 participants in celebration of our beautiful home.

The festival continues to be a sustainability-focused community event that promotes recycling, alternative energy, and up-cycled arts and crafts through vendors and education booths.

This celebration focuses on how local action can create global change.

This free event — including a silent auction, food vendors, and a beer and wine garden — takes place on the Springdale Ball Field, located at 126 Lion Blvd., from 1 to 7 p.m.

Local bands will perform a variety of solar-powered including R&B, gospel, folk, bluegrass, and rock.

The Earth Day Committee believes that educational events like the Zion Canyon Earth Day celebration inform the public about the importance of sustainability, recycling, and alternative energy sources. Springdale is continuing its efforts to offset the energy used in public facilities with solar power and currently has 96.4 kilowatts of solar capacity installed. Festivals like Earth Day and the Zion Canyon Music Festival have been instrumental in promoting solar power for the town and its residents. The town has been recognized as an EPA Green Power Community since 2008.

This year, in conjunction with Earth Day, the Rotary Club of Zion Canyon will host a statewide Rotary Conference. This promises to bring folks from all over the state.

Come and be a part of this fun educational event for the whole family. Volunteers are needed.
