An art display entitled “Earth in Black & White” will feature the ceramic works of Barbara Ellard and photographs by Michael Plyler at the Zion Human History Museum June 7 through Aug. 27. The artists will also host a lecture at the Canyon Community Center in Springdale June 13 at 7:30 p.m. Both artists have a deep understanding of the Southwest and in particular Zion National Park.

Ellard’s art has included ceramics, mosaics, textiles, paper making, and printmaking. She is currently focused on ceramics, which include functional pieces and sculptures. Some of her work is high fired, and other pieces are finished using low fired “alternative” firing techniques such as pit firing, naked raku, and horse hair. Her ceramic artwork is represented at the Juniper Sky Gallery in Kayenta.

Plyler has been making photographs on film since 1976. In addition to his landscape work, he’s been photographing the Highland Maya of Guatemala since 1982. A large body of this work has been added to the permanent collection of The National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian and the San Diego Museum of Man.

“Making photographs with a view camera is a meditation,” Plyler said. “It forces you as the photographer to make photographs one at a time. As it should be. Since I am a user of Ansel Adams’ Zone System, it is also the most appropriate camera to use to achieve the contrast control desired in film development, treating each negative individually.”

The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
