Joanne Slotnik, cofounder of Salt Lake Indivisible, will give a public talk on “Ramping Up the Resistance in 2018” March 8 at 7 p.m. in the Cedar City Public Library atrium. The presentation, sponsored by Action Iron County, is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required.

Slotnik is a Utah attorney with a background in education. She served as Assistant Attorney General for Utah and has been called “a true trailblazer of the legal community” for her work as executive director of the Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission.

Salt Lake Indivisible is a nationwide progressive grass-roots network. It was launched last July with the goal “to enlist every American in imagining the government we need and working to put in place the innovations and reforms that will make that vision a reality.” There are thousands of local groups in the Salt Lake Indivisible network, and the national group says, “We have been successful in reaching our key target demographic, with 60% of visitors to our website and social media followers being between ages 18 and 34.”

Salt Lake Indivisible, co-founded by Slotnik, has more than 8,000 members and is “dedicated to an ethical, accountable government.”

“They challenge deportations of immigrants that will break apart families; are gathering signatures for Better Boundaries, an effort to correct gerrymandering in Utah; and will be registering new voters for the upcoming election,” said Arlene Braithwaite, a member of Action Iron County. “We are thrilled to have Joanne coming to Cedar City to share her experience and give us practical advice on successful political activism. Joanne is warm, funny and down to earth. There will be much that Action Iron County can learn from her.”

Action Iron County, an independent group formerly known as WMW Cedar City, was formed after last year’s Women’s March on Washington. The group has approximately 250 members who “stand for inclusion, diversity, arts, science, public education, environment, democracy, women’s rights, and human rights.” Last year, the group organized a Town Hall meeting in Cedar City in February and a local March for Science in April in conjunction with the worldwide event and participated in the southern Utah rally for national monuments in May. This January, they participated in the Las Vegas “Power to the Polls” rally, also in conjunction with other national and international events.

The Cedar City Public Library is located at 303 N 100 E in Cedar City.
