To raise funds for The Learning Center for Families, the Corporate Sports Challenge was held at the Washington City Community Center on Friday, Aug. 14. The event was a huge success, and participants agreed that they hope it will be even bigger next year.

Over 70 participants competed in fun, sports-oriented team activities such as dodge ball, rock climbing, tug-o-war, volleyball, and a hoop shot challenge. Local businesses like weBoost, Mountain America Credit Union, Therapia Healing Center, Corporate Alliance, InfoWest, and Merrill Lynch sent teams of employees to compete and connect in nine different sport rotations set up around the community center.

The Mountain America Credit Union team took first place, and a member of the InfoWest team won the grand prize drawing of a two-hour hot air balloon ride for six people.

All proceeds from the event benefited The Learning Center for Families, which serves families with infants and toddlers who are vulnerable due to stressors such as poor health, poverty, developmental delay, or developmental conditions like Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, or autism. The event raised $3,000 for the center in addition to raising over $7,000 of in-kind support for the event.

“We’re so grateful for the support we’ve received from local businesses and families in our community,” said Janie Belliston, development officer for The Learning Center for Families. “Everywhere I turn, I meet someone who either has a child or grandchild or neighbor who has been helped by TLC over the years. Many of them even get emotional talking about their experience with TLC, which just reminds me of the positive impact we’re having on these families. We’re hoping that fundraisers like the Corporate Sports Challenge will help us increase awareness about our mission and raise the extra funding we need to serve more families on our waiting list.”
