St. George Astronomy Group and Silver Reef Museum to host star party

The Independent

The St. George Astronomy Group and the Silver Reef Museum will host a free public star party in Leeds on July 10. All are invited to view the sky through a variety of telescopes and to learn the constellations.

The event will begin at 9 p.m. at the Cosmopolitan building, located at 1915 Wells Fargo Drive in Leeds, with a slideshow about telescopes and what viewers can expect to see through a variety of telescopes as well as which ones will be used. Following the slideshow, running from about 9:45 p.m. until approximately 11 p.m., telescope observation will begin. Telescopes will be pointed toward Saturn as well as a variety of star clusters, double stars, and other celestial bodies.

Sunset will be a little before 9 p.m., and the event may be cancelled on short notice if the weather is cloudy. Reservations are requested but not required for this event. Donations are appreciated, as they make these special programs possible. Expected public turnout is around 50-75 people. Participants may park at the Silver Reef Museum, located at 1903 Wells Fargo Drive in Leeds, next to the Cosmopolitan building.

The St. George Astronomy Group is an informal association of amateur astronomers in St. George, Toquerville, and other nearby communities in southwest Utah. There are no officers, dues, or formal meetings. Membership is open to anyone who wishes to actively participate in hosting star parties and working for dark skies over St. George. The group was formed to exchange ideas and foster fellowship among people with an interest in astronomy, to host public star parties, and to promote proper lighting and dark skies over southwest Utah. The group represents the greater St. George area as far as Kanab and works in cooperation with the Southern Utah Astronomical Society and the Colorado Plateau Dark Skies Cooperative (a unit of the International Dark-Skies Association).
