Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge“The Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge” has been going strong since 2005, and this upcoming edition of the increasingly popular storytelling platform isn’t clowning around! This particular challenge will coincide with the 15th anniversary of Horror-Fest, and organizers have a theme that’s sure to scare as well as tickle the funny bone.

Horror Fest Episode XV 2

For those not familiar, The Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge was designed to give southern Utah-based filmmakers of all ages and all skill sets an opportunity to make a short film using any resources available to them. It’s exciting and unpredictable, but more importantly, it’s a ton of fun! Whether you’ve made a film before or not, organizers want to encourage all of you to come out and take part in the challenge. To take part, all you need to do is attend the “Theme Reveal Meeting” Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot behind The Electric Theater (located at 68 E. Tabernacle).

At this meeting, a theme will be unveiled (hint: the featured photo in this article offers up a big clue) alongside a handful of rules and guidelines. There will be a $25 submission fee per movie to be paid at meeting. Collected cash will be presented as prize money at the Guerilla Filmmaker Showcase to take place during Horror-Fest XV this October. Following the meeting, filmmakers will have approximately four weeks to put together their short films.

Horror-Fest 2016 Star WarsNothing quite beats the rush you’ll experience when you share your cinematic creations on the big screen with a wildly enthusiastic crowd! Organizers recognize that horror isn’t for everyone, so it should also be noted that even though this “Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge” will coincide with “Horror-Fest,” it doesn’t necessarily mean your project has to be a horror film. Wily guerilla filmmaking veterans Lonie Black and Brandon Tippets have been making short films for these events for over 10 years, and the majority of their projects have been comedic in nature. Just keep that in mind.

Organizers look forward to seeing familiar faces at the upcoming “Theme Reveal Meeting” Aug. 30, but they hope to see plenty of new faces in the mix as well.

Adam Mast
Adam Mast's love affair with the movies began at the ripe age of 6 after his parents took him to see a little film called Jaws at a drive-in theater in Northern California. From that moment, he was hooked. Mast began his epic stint as a film critic with The Independent back in May of 1996. At the time, the publication was still in its infancy and known as the Revolution. Through the years, Mast would go on to write for Zboneman.com before co-founding the entertainment site, Cinemast.net. His love of storytelling would also lead him to aid in the creation of the film-centric 501(C)(3) nonprofit, Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah (FMASU)--An organization primarily known for championing storytellers both locally and worldwide by way of various film-related events held throughout the year, including The Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge, Desertscape International Film Festival, HorrorFest International, and A Merry Movie Christmas. His love of cinema and the arts in general knows no bounds. Mast currently resides in St. George, UT with his lovely (and undeniably supportive) wife Tonja and their four amazing children, McKenzie, Matthew, McKian, and Mason.
