The launch and ribbon cutting of the first bike-share program in southern Utah will take place Jan. 11 at 2:15 p.m. at the Dixie Center. The Live Well St. George Bike Share by Zagster is an app-based, smart-bike program that allows users access to bicycles by using a mobile device.

Zagster, one of the fastest growing bike share companies in the U.S., was selected by the city in the fall of 2017 to provide this service to residents and visitors based on the affordable program cost, lightweight and rider-friendly bike design, ease of use, and system scalability.

“The City of St. George is so excited to see this public/private partnership and we express gratitude to the sponsors who are making bikeshare possible,” said St. George Mayor Jon Pike. “With more than 300 sunny days every year, St. George is a great place to bicycle year-round. Bikeshare will provide a healthy and affordable opportunity for our residents, students and visitors to enjoy our scenic trails and historic downtown.”

On its initial launch, the bike share program will feature 55 bikes and 10 stations located between the two black hills in the central St. George area. Bike share stations will be conveniently located near trails, Suntran bus stops, lodging and housing complexes, and commercial and institutional centers.

“We are pleased to partner with the City of St. George and Zagster to help bring the Live Well Bike Share program here,” said Mitch Cloward, administrator of Intermountain Dixie Regional Medical Center. “Bike share is a great fit with our city’s many beautiful trails and parks. Together, these community assets really can help people live the healthiest lives possible, and that is our mission.”

The mission and motivating force behind the Live Well Bike Share program is to improve mobility and transportation options, encourage people to be physically active, reduce traffic congestion, and promote innovation in the St. George area.

The program is designed to be affordable with annual memberships ranging from $15 to $30 and a pay-as-you-go option for $1 per half hour of use.

The city is pursuing more partnerships and hopes additional local businesses will be interested in sponsoring stations in 2018, allowing the program to grow and making it more accessible and convenient for residents, students, and visitors.

Here is how the Live Well St. George Bike Share works.

Joining

On any Apple or Android device, customers can download the Zagster app, create a profile, and search the app for St. George to find nearby station locations.

Choosing a bike

The bike’s number must be entered into the Zagster app. Tapping “start ride” will result in the delivery of a unique code to open and close the lockbox.

Unlocking

A key from inside the lockbox operates the U-lock that attaches the bike to its station. Users should shut the lockbox before riding.

Riding

Riders should use the U-lock to keep the bike secure if when making stops along the way. When riders are finished, they should lock the bike back to any Zagster station, close the lockbox, and tap “end ride” on the Zagster app.
