Our free, This Movie Club, weekly film series is back at the Electric Theatre after our unfortunate hiatus!
This Movie Club and the nonprofit, Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah (FMASU) are joining forces once more in an effort to bring St. George, UT a free weekly film series every Tuesday at the historic Electric Theater. While we are certainly living in strange and often scary times, we need events like this now more than ever. And in fact, the team behind this weekly film series plan on implementing precautions in an effort to ensure that attendees feel safe and comfortable. COVID 19 safety measures will include sanitizing stations, limited seating, and social distancing. Film series organizers also ask that attendees wear masks to the event because at the end of the day, while movies are of the utmost importance to everyone involved, people are priority number one.
Why a free weekly film series? Well, in addition to creating a sense of normalcy amongst the community (even if we might be headed for a kind of new normal), this event was designed to keep the spirit of film history alive. And to do it in a theatrical setting is key because movies are still best experienced in a communal environment with people who love them.
From January to March of this year, This Movie Club had already gotten the ball rolling by showcasing several noteworthy films of yesteryear before being all but forced into a lengthy hiatus by that pesky Coronavirus. Memorable titles included the film series opener “Sunset Boulevard,” “A Matter of Life and Death,” “The Apartment,” “His Girl Friday,” “Defending Your Life,” and the unforgettable Buster Keaton-headlined silent film, “Sherlock Jr.” which was actually presented with live organ accompaniment by the gifted Holden Green.
On Tuesday, July 21st, FMASU, and This Movie Club return with a screening of Steven Spielberg’s warm, adventurous, and emotionally charged tale of friendship, “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” A great film for the entire family! Doors open at 5:30 PM with the movie starting promptly at 6 PM.
Per usual, all upcoming screenings will be followed by intimate and informative discussions led by head This Movie Club curator, Beau Stucki, and special guests. Past speakers have included “Gone With the Wind” supporting player, Patrick Curtis. It should also be noted that some of these movie nights post-screening discussions will include optional (and delectable) food items for your consumption.
Currently, This Movie Club’s lineup is programmed through the end of August. That lineup is as follows;
JULY THEME– “BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
July 21st– E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL
July 28th– THE FALL
AUGUST THEME– “GOTTA DANCE!”
August 4th– YOU WERE NEVER LOVLIER
August 11th– THE RED SHOES
August 18th– AN AMERICAN IN PARIS
August 25th– BLACK ORPHEUS
This free film series was born out of pure love of cinema and the vast array of titles that organizers want to share and discuss with the community throughout the coming weeks is certainly a passionate reflection of that.

THIS MOVIE CLUB– Beau Stucki and Chris Bringhurst started This Movie Club online several years ago as an open group geared towards the discussion and appreciation of cinema as art, as entertainment, and as a view into the human experience. In 2020, This Movie Club expanded into a live theatrical setting as a means to cover similar ground in a way that’s even more exciting and interactive for avid filmgoers.
FILM AND MEDIA ALLIANCE OF SOUTHERN UTAH (FMASU)– Started by John Pugh and Adam Mast in 2017, FMASU is a 501(C)(3) non-profit designed to encourage, inspire, nurture, and educate filmmaking talent of all ages and all skill sets and to create unique film-related events for attendees by way of a variety of programs held throughout the year. Additionally, FMASU prides itself on keeping the spirit of film history and the theatrical experience alive.
