FMASU presents Halloween-inspired movie event Horror-Fest: A Nightmare on Main Street

Horror-Fest has been a staple here in St. George since 2002. This cinematic celebration of all things Halloween serves as a both a celebration of local filmmaking talent and as a showcase for the best in witching season-inspired big-screen entertainment. This year, FMASU’s annual spooktacular, aptly titled Horror-Fest: A Nightmare on Main Street, will pay tribute to a couple of legendary entertainment properties celebrating impressive milestones in 2019: Wes Craven’s beloved ’80s slasher opus “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (celebrating its 35th anniversary) and Rod Serling’s groundbreaking TV series “The Twilight Zone” (celebrating its 60th anniversary).

What do programmers have in store for attendees this year? Have a look.

Guerilla Shorts Showcase

Festivities will start at 6 p.m. at Megaplex’s Main Street Cinema with “The 2019 Horror-Fest Edition of the Guerilla Shorts Showcase.” Storytellers were given the theme “It was just a bad dream” and a limited amount of time to put together a 5-minute short film using any resources available to them. This particular challenge saw a record-breaking 30 filmmaker sign ups. Attendees will have a rare opportunity to experience these creative Halloween-inspired endeavors on the big screen. You’ll also be able to get in on the action and vote for your favorite as there will be an audience choice award handed out alongside three jury prizes.

Not that you need other reasons to attend, but event organizers also promise a little something extra unique during The Guerilla Shorts Showcase. They suggest it’s a creative first for a local storytelling platform that’s been going strong since 2005.

Costume contest and Jack-O-Lantern competition

Programmers encourage attendees to come to Horror-Fest in their Halloween best as there will be prizes awarded to the most creative costumes. Additionally, if pumpkin carving is your bag, bring your best Jack-O-Lantern out to the event as a prize will be awarded to the most artistic design. Note that no carving will be allowed on the premises. Awards for costumes and Jack-O-Lanterns will be handed out just before the closing night screening.

35th anniversary screening of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”

Horror-Fest will close out festivities with a screening of Wes Craven’s seminal ’80s horror opus, “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” This movie not only brought us Robert England’s iconic boogeyman Freddy Krueger but also introduced the world to a little-known actor named Johnny Depp. You haven’t experienced the terrifying nightmare of a movie that is “Elm Street” until you’ve experienced it on the big screen with a group of adoring fans.

Tickets are only $10. A limited number of $25 VIP passes are also available at fmasu.com. (includes reserved seating and a special limited edition goodie bag).

Given that the Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge saw a record-breaking number of sign ups, Horror-Fest: A Nightmare on Main Street is expected to sell out, so buy your tickets quickly! Schedule subject to change.
