Canyon Creek Services holds Domestic Violence Awareness Month events

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Canyon Creek Services, a local nonprofit that provides services to survivors, has a month full of activities and fundraising events focused on domestic violence awareness and prevention.

Canyon Creek’s eighth annual Dine Out for Shelter event will take place Oct. 9. This all-day event invites people to eat out at a long list of many local participating restaurants that will donate a percentage of the day’s revenue back to Canyon Creek Services. This year, there are 17 participating restaurants including Charlie’s Southern BBQ and Pizza Cart, which are donating 50 percent of their day’s revenue. Other participants include Centro Pizzeria, Pastry Pub, Teriyaki Grill, 5 Buck Pizza (both locations), Alfredo A’s Mexican Restaurant, Dairy Queen (both locations), Brick House, All American Diner, Pork Belly’s, Bruno’s, Perks, Depot Grill, and Pisco Peruvian.

On Oct. 24, join Canyon Creek, Title IX of SUU, and The Iron County Sexual and Domestic Violence Coalition as they host an Intimate Partner Violence Discussion Panel. This will be located in the SUU Education Building in room 104. Representatives from law enforcement, Canyon Creek, SUU, and other stakeholders will come together to answer questions surrounding this type of violence in our communities. The audience will also have an opportunity to ask questions.

The last event of the month will be a candlelight vigil in remembrance of the victims who have been lost this year in Utah due to domestic violence. The vigil will be held Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Starlight Room at SUU’s Student Center. Speakers for the event include Iron County Sheriff Ken Carpenter, Title IX coordinator and director of ethics for SUU Heather Ogden, and executive director of Canyon Creek Services Dr. Brant Wadsworth.
