Cedar City Arts Council spring social showcases mini-grant recipients

By Shaylene Baruffi-Jensen

The 2019 Cedar City Arts Council spring social will be held Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the second-floor conference room at Heritage Center Theater. The Cedar City Arts Council presents community socials three times a year to help others become acquainted with some of the artists who live here in Iron County. These events showcase and celebrate some of the local artists who have received mini-grants from the Cedar City Arts Council. The objective is to have live music, art displays, and reports on the use that the recipients have made of their awarded funds. The Cedar City Arts Council socials are free and open to the public.

This spring social will include poetry by Natalie Young and Nano Taggart. Natalie Young is a founding editor for the poetry magazine Sugar House Review. By day, she works as an art director for an ad agency based out of Salt Lake City. Her poetry has recently appeared in Green Mountains Review, The Midwest Quarterly, Rattle, South Dakota Review, Drunken Boat, Pilgrimage, Spillway, and others. She serves on the board of directors of the Utah Division of Arts and Museums. Nano Taggart is a founding editor of Sugar House Review and a co-recipient of a grant from the Utah Division of Arts and Museums. You can see some of his writing in places like Terrain.org, The American Journal of Poetry, and Weber — The Contemporary West. He works independently as a grant writer and serves on the board of directors of The Mesa in Springdale.

Music will be performed by the exuberant 8eez band, originally formed as part of a 2017 Christmas show in Parowan. They got along so well that they continued to perform together and eventually developed a three-hour set of ‘80s songs, which they performed for the Independence Day celebration in Enterprise. Since then, they have played at various community events including the Orchestra of Southern Utah’s fall recital series. The band includes lead singer Tamara Reber, Carylee Zwang on drums, Stan Szczesny on guitar, Lance Basset on bass guitar, and Lindsay Szczesny on keyboard. The 8eez rehearse weekly and especially enjoy playing the songs “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey and “Alone” by Heart.

Camille Dailey will report on the stained glass window she is creating for a Main Street business. It utilizes rock art with funding assistance from a CCAC mini-grant.

This social will also include the renewal of the coupon reward program made available to members of the arts council in 2018. More businesses in town have agreed to provide discounts in their establishments to current and new members of the council. These businesses will be recognized and thanked for their willingness to support the arts in Iron County. Art displays will be presented by Mona Woolsey, Malcolm Howard, and Marta and Burt Mitchell. Refreshments will be provided by Nature Hills Farm.
