ST. GEORGE, UT – Adopt your new best friend today! The Independent’s, Southern Utah Adoptable Pets Guide features adoptable pets from various animal shelters throughout southern Utah.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is located five miles north of Kanab at 5001 Angel Canyon Road. All adoptable cats and dogs are spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccinations. If you have questions about a specific pet or the adoption process, please email adoptions@bestfriends.org. If you’d like to apply to adopt one of these featured pets, click the link to their bio where you will find the adoption survey.

Waggles

Waggles was born in 2019 and came to Best Friends from northern Arizona in winter 2021. Handsome and friendly, Waggles loves people and is still learning his “goat ABCs” but don’t worry, he is a fast learner. He needs a forever home where he can work on his social skills with other goats and get lots of love from his family.

Jelly

Jelly was born in February 2014 in southern Utah and came to Best Friends in summer 2018. Just like the condiment, Jelly is used to being in the middle and staying out of the spotlight. Jelly loves people but doesn’t mind if her friends get belly rubs first, she’s happy to just relax in the sun until her turn. She is all black with white socks and a white tip on her tail and she needs a forever home with other pigs and a kind, loving family.

Shrek

Shrek is a friendly bird who likes interaction with people, as well as with his mate Fiona. The two are a lively and adorable duo, with lots to say. They are energetic and curious, so will need a lot of space and activities to keep them entertained. If you are interested in adding this spunky couple to your flock, please fill out an application.

Fiona

Fiona usually leaves the human interaction to her mate, Shrek, but she is very expressive about her thoughts and opinions. The two are a lively and adorable duo, with lots to say. They are energetic and curious, so will need a lot of space and activities to keep them occupied. If you are interested in adding this quirky duo to your flock, please fill out an application.

Simon

Simon has a big voice to match his big personality! While he loves to interact with people through his cage, he is still learning how to be confident outside of it. He would do best in a patient and experienced home. Some of his favorite things to do are sing, dance, and destroy things! If you think you are the right home for Simon, please fill out an application!

Snickers

Snickers is a lovely older Shetland pony-type gelding who has obviously worked hard all his life. He has earned a nice retirement, for sure, and he has a few physical challenges but is still lively and full of vim and vigor. He was born in approximately 1991, so he is a senior citizen but still has a lot to offer and a lot of life to live. He is a great companion pony and has lived with a variety of other horses and ponies. Because of his aging teeth, he needs a diet of soaked hay pellets rather than hay. We’re happy that he came to Best Friends so that we can help him to find a happy forever home with someone who can love and appreciate him for the amazing little guy that he is.

Reginald

Reginald recently arrived at Wild Friends and he is already proving to be quite the character! Reggie is sweet and funny, coming right up to the fence to say hello to guests on tours. He is estimated to only be around a year old, so if you’ve got a flock of ladies looking for a funny husband to fill your ranch with lots of laughs, email us at wild@bestfriends.org today!

Earl Grey

Did someone say crumpets? You’ll already have your tea if you adopt me! My name is Earl Grey, and I can’t wait to be in a home. You see, I was on the streets and a friendly human was feeding me, but I was attacked by a dog. Fortunately, only my tail was injured and it’s healing nicely. RSQ has improved my life and now I can improve yours if you adopt me, Earl Grey. I am a very sweet fella.  And I am house-trained.

Jon

Jon is a loving cat. He is talkative especially when he knows it’s can food time. He gets along with other cats and this tuxedo cat is always dressed for a night out on the town. Jon is so ready to find his fur-ever home. Come meet this dapper of a cat!

Aries

We got Aries as a kitten with his brother Leo and now he’s full grown. Aries is an independent cat who also can be mischievous. He is confident and passionate. When he loves a human, he gives all his heart, which is probably why his favorite color is red. Ask volunteer Bryn about that! He would love to be king of the household and be the only cat. His spirit animal is a cheetah and like the cheetah, he can be full of energy. He’s an avid member of the RSQ bird-watching club. If you’re an Aries, you would be most compatible. However, the soulmate for Aries is a Leo, Gemini, or Sagittarius. Do you have the sign for Aries?

Ashton

Ashton is a great cat. He is about 2 years old and is a long-haired beautiful guy. He doesn’t mind other cats and is very loving and playful. Ashton is litterbox trained and will make a great pet for some lucky person or family. He’s a handsome love bug who gets along with other playful cats. You’ll never be lonely when he’s around. Rex

Rex came from a home with another dog and a cat whose owner passed away. He is a super sweet boy who wants nothing but attention, a nice walk, and someone to throw a ball for him. He is a great dog just looking for another home to call his own. His adoption fee is $60.

Frida

Who can resist that precious face??  This pretty girl is Frida friendly and playful, and she can’t wait to find her forever home!  She is too strong for young children and would do best with older children and a family that has time to take her jogging or play a long game of fetch with her every day. With the right family, she is going to be a ton of fun to have around.  When she’s all tired out, she will enjoy playing games and snuggling up to her new family for some belly rubs and cozy cuddle time! Her adoption fee is $60.

Raider

Raider is a super sweet baby who unfortunately has not had consistent training and really needs a family who can set him up for success. He has energy to spare and would benefit from a home where he gets enough exercise and mental stimulation. He is a smart boy and learns quickly. Prefers humans of the female persuasion. He loves to play ball/fetch and will bring back the toy and give it to you to throw again for him – throw-fetch-bring back-repeat. His adoption fee is $60.

Milo

Are you looking to live large? Then, let us introduce you to Milo! This beautiful brown brindle and white mastiff is a belly-rub-loving, people-adoring, attention-craving charmer! He has a big head and a big heart, which makes him hard to miss and hard to resist. What a big marshmallow! Milo will come right up to anyone and lean into them to get as close as possible to get a big hug. He’s an affectionate goofball who lives life to the fullest. Because of his size, he is going to do best in a home without young children. He does not always get along with other dogs. Milo would do better as the only dog in the home. His adoption fee is $60.

West

West is a sporty boy who can fetch, sit, drop, and comes when called – the perfect outgoing companion for an active family. West is also great with other dogs. Making sure he gets plenty of exercise and furthering his manners training will go a long way in helping him keep from making you dizzy from all of his energy.

West is a stunning example of a cattle dog and is just one big smiling face waiting to give you a lick hello. Life is all about finding someone to throw the ball and tug-of-war. He would love a new family who will be as loyal to him as he will be to them and give him all the love he deserves. His adoption fee is $60.

Leah

This lovely girl is just a hoot. Leah loves running, playing, and is full of energy. She was mainly raised outdoors. She knows basic commands like sit and paw. She loves playing with toys and can definitely entertain herself with them. Her coat markings are very pretty and the facial expressions she makes are priceless. She would do best in a home that is going to stay active with her and give her work/play to do. We know that she is going to make a home very happy! Her adoption fee is $60.

April

April is a quiet, thoughtful girl who, once she gets to know you, will smooch and happily show you her tricks. She is looking for a caring and compassionate home that will help build her confidence and understand she is a bit shy when meeting new people. She was found as a stray. April is learning to play with toys and does well on a leash. April is a very nice dog. Her adoption fee is $60.

Nick

Nick is a beautiful 61 pound neutered male Malamute mix with classic Keeshond markings. He is 7.5 years old, is non-aggressive, and is timid in his demeanor. He will bond closely with a single person but is friendly with all who live in the household. He is good with other dogs and cats and barks only when a new person is in the house or yard. His tail was removed two years ago because of a tumor but he’s fine now. He’s recently been groomed and had a dental so he’s good to go!

Nick likes routine. He walks well once he is familiar with the route. He likes to be both inside and outside, knows how to use a doggie door, and is house trained. If he is the only dog, you can free-feed him; he eats what he wants and leaves the rest for later. Nick likes to sleep in the bedroom on the floor. He doesn’t jump on furniture. He is mild-mannered when giving him a bath and is not afraid of the dryer. He is not very good in the car; if taking him to the vet or groomer he needs to be kenneled or have someone sit with him in the back seat, paying attention to him.

The best family for Nick is a retired couple or individual who likes to chill at home. Frequent travelers are not a good match for him.

Koko

Koko has a sweet personality and is pretty chill. She enjoys playing with other dogs at the dog park and going on morning and nightly walks (although her hound dog nose slows her down stopping to smell anything interesting). If she gets off her leash, she will run:  she is so happy to be free and smelling EVERYTHING! She loves tug-o-war and playing with her toys, especially the squeaky ones, and rarely chews up anything she isn’t supposed to even though she is still just a puppy.

Koko is pretty mellow during the day but if she doesn’t get energy out she will get hyper at night. She is crate trained but loves sneaking into bed with the kids. She can sit and shake and rings the bells or barks when she wants to go out. She is good with cats (until she wants to play and they don’t). She is good with people and loves little kids but will jump on them to play so she would do better with children eight years old and up. She LOVES a good head, neck, or shoulder massage but may be the only dog ever to not like having her back or rear scratched!

Koko would benefit from consistent training by someone who has experience with hounds. She is an inside dog and needs an adopter who won’t plan on keeping her outside. She can be very vocal at the dog park but rarely barks at home. She will dig holes in the yard if she gets bored and, if permitted to dig in the sand, will be in doggy heaven! And, in case she gets muddy, she is not bad at taking baths.

Barrysouther utah adoptable pets BARRY

Barry is not a lap dog (unless he decides he wants to be). Instead, he is a grumpy boy who came to us with a broken pelvis which still causes him pain. In the year he’s been with us, Barry also suffered seizures and kidney stones. He’s on a special diet and medication for all of these things, but he’s still a grump. And we all still love him!

Since being in our care, the poor guy has had to deal with puppies and big dogs who don’t understand why he doesn’t want to roughhouse. He does get along with dogs who aren’t in his face and likes to fetch a ball as long as you don’t try to take it back from him (Barry’s rules).

Ornery as he is, Barry is kind of our mascot and we want the old guy to catch a break and live out the remainder of his life with someone he can find solace in.

Barry loves to rub his back on the floor and wiggle and loves to have belly rubs by a person of his choosing. He enjoys certain members of our team while others simply aren’t his cup of tea.

Lady

Still a baby herself at only 1-1/2 years old, sweet Lady has been the best mom ever since she came to BAM with seven two-day-old puppies. Her babies are weaned and going to new homes and now Lady is looking for her very own person to play with and spoil her rotten.

Lady is a gentle, smart, good-natured goofball who loves to play with people and other dogs (she does not, however, care for cats). She’s the perfect companion! Once she’s been spayed, the adoption will be final and this amazing girl will be yours forever.

Lady’s Puppies

Meet some of Lady’s wonderful puppies Tramp, Mochi, and Scooter. If you’re interested in any of the puppies, stop by that BAM Place Tuesday–Saturday between 9 am–5 pm, or submit a BAM Adoption Application and, if approved, we’ll contact you as soon as possible to arrange a meeting. If you don’t hear back within 7 days, please text us at (435) 773-5209.

Poppy

Poppy is a complicated girl who is both sweet and sassy. She would prefer a quiet home without small children where she is the only dog or maybe has one other small dog friend. Poppy is housebroken using a doggy door and gets along with her foster’s small dogs but is a loner.

Poppy is approximately 7-8 years old. She was rescued from a life on the streets of Phoenix and is still cautious, exhibiting some defensive behaviors but really wants to trust and love! She asks for belly rubs and neck pets but these must be given on her terms.

Poppy can be picked up and held if needed but she is not yet a lap dog. She fears having a leash or harness put on her but loves her walks! Because Poppy is HIGHLY treat motivated, patient training will likely be successful. She will require an experienced adopter with a slow, steady training protocol, lots and lots of repetition, and lots and lots of treats to help her overcome her fear and aggressive behavior.

Roxy

Roxy needs a playmate!  This girl is so affectionate, full of life, and smart, smart, smart!!! She wants nothing more than get outside and play ball, tug, you name it–she just wants to play!

Unfortunately, life changes didn’t allow pretty Roxy to stay with her family and she has to be re-homed. She’s a wonderful girl (did we mention that she’s smart?) who needs someone with an active lifestyle and time to help develop her mind. She would probably be a great agility dog, frisbee fetcher, and/or running/hiking partner. And once she’s worn you out, she’ll snuggle up to you on the couch for cuddles and cookies. (Exercise and cookies- you can’t lose!) And can you imagine gazing into those gorgeous eyes every day?
