Be in a band or landscape your home with SUU Community Education

Resolve to try something different this year with several SUU Community Education class options from Southern Utah University. Two upcoming classes — the Cedar City Community Band and a firewise landscaping class — give southern Utah residents fun, new options to learn something new.
How long has it been since you picked up that trumpet, flute, or saxophone? Now is your time to shine with a community band for everybody.
The Cedar City Community Band is a non-auditioned concert band for individuals from southern Utah and surrounding areas. Its aim is to provide opportunities for those wishing to develop their instrumental performance skills by rehearsing and performing fun, exciting, and challenging music. All high school-aged and older individuals with prior concert band performance experience are welcome.
Instructor Adam Lambert is currently director of bands and brass studies at SUU. Lambert is also the conductor of the American Fork Symphony and the assistant conductor of the Orchestra of Southern Utah. After graduating with a degree in music education from BYU, Lambert earned his doctorate degree in trumpet performance from the University of North Texas.
Or, for homeowners, is your home prepared for a wildfire? Did you know that embers from a wildfire can travel over a mile and still catch fire?
In SUU Community Education’s firewise landscaping class, participants will learn about the science of wildfires and how to prepare their home, landscape, and community for wildfire season. SUU’s Dr. Jacqualine Grant will discuss how vegetation, construction, and having a safety plan can help make a home safer during a wildfire event. The class will be followed with a discussion about what it means to be a fire-adapted community that is prepared to coexist with Utah’s naturally occurring wildland fires. Interested class participants should bring photos of plants or areas of concern for evaluation by Grant.
