Southern Utah University will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a new business building on April 27 at 11a.m. in the A9 parking lot, located just north of the SUU student center. The event will consist of a flag ceremony by ROTC, speakers, a musical number, and refreshments provided by SUU’s hospitality management students. The event is free and open to the public.

“The new building will provide needed space for students, professors, and professionals to collaborate and experiment with business ideas, assignments, and projects,” said Mary Pearson, interim associate dean for SUU’s business school.

Momentum for the new building started in 2015 when SUU received $7.5 million from the Dixie and Anne Leavitt Foundation, the largest single gift in the school’s history.

“Throughout the years, the Leavitts have stepped forward to help SUU in its most critical moments, this gift will transform SUU,” said SUU President Scott Wyatt. “We need more role models like them for our students, examples of hard work, good character, and family devotion.”

In addition to the Leavitt’s gift, the Utah legislature approved funding for $8 million.

Architects and engineers have since completed a comprehensive review of a potential site, working with SUU faculty and staff to create a building that will satisfy many campus needs.

One of the business building’s innovative spaces will be the new Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Center for Entrepreneurship. The center, designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and innovation, will be a place for all students interested in starting their own company and learning to think like entrepreneurs.

The 42,000-square-foot building will be constructed with state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, and technology in order to meet the needs of its students. The building is expected to be completed in fall 2018.
