The first year, it was cold, rainy, and damp. Subsequent years were rainy, damp, and cold. It didn’t matter. The SunRiver Pet Festival staff still showed up on a Saturday in St. George decked out in hats, gloves, and rain gear. Damp fur and muddy feet were inconsequential. Vendors set up tables in the rain, despite the fact that some of the animals they brought along were not amused.
Planning for such an event is a monumental task involving man hours, meetings, and maybe some sweat and tears. It could involve blood, too. One never knows. Therefore, to give in to the whims of Mother Nature would be admitting defeat. Earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods might be the exception. In some ways, the SunRiver Pet Festival is a celebration of nature. It’s all about enhancing our interaction with animals and that benefits everyone.
After eight years, the SunRiver Pet Festival is still viable. Maybe we are learning the importance of developing a symbiotic relationship with those creatures that are dependent upon us for survival. Perhaps we finally realize that if we rub their bellies or scratch their backs, they will return the favor with faithful companionship and loyalty. My cat is willing to scratch my back, but the trip to the ER would not outweigh the advantages in this case!
This year’s SunRiver Pet Festival will have a new focus and some added fun. Bark Blitz will feature adorable, entertaining dogs doing adorable, entertaining things (think Puppy Bowl). The WOOF Center will sponsor a dynamic dog-related demo, and Josh Warburton, Independent candidate for Washington County Commissioner, will be present to answer questions about a proposed Washington County Animal Shelter to be constructed on the grounds of Purgatory Correctional Facility. Similar programs nationwide have been very successful. It’s a win-win for all.
The SunRiver Pet Festival is not just another event. It is a marriage of determination, passion, and compassion. It is a way to give back to the community in an enjoyable way. We promise entertainment, fun, and the chance to interact with animals in a positive atmosphere. We can’t promise good weather, but we can promise that by participating you can make a difference in the lives of many deserving animals and those that care for them. I hope to see you on Saturday, June 4, at 9 a.m. at the SunRiver Golf Course. Maybe this year it won’t rain, but maybe it will. Regardless, I will be there. Just saying.
