My name is David Johnson and I have lived in St. George for over 16 years. And in that time I have seen a lot of changes. The one thing that hasn’t changed is that like it or not the “good old boys” are going to have it their way at any cost.  So I think the people of St. George need to read this and take it to heart.

I have been dealing with Stephen Wade and I would guess he is one of the top “good old boys” since he seems to be able to get away with just about anything. He does this because he has money and power throughout this state and people and companies as well as government agencies are afraid to go against him for fear he may quite doing business with them or in some other financial way cut them off. In my book he is nothing more than a bully! The sad thing is he also uses the fact that he donates to charities as a way to make himself appear above reproach. I’m sure I’ll receive comments asking what I have done to help the community. Before you make those comments my question is what has the average person done or given to the community? Let’s face it most of us would like to be able to give more monetarily but like in my case I am just trying to make it a better place to live by doing what I knows is right for the greater good of the community. That is why I even mention Stephen Wade because I have been trying to get some help from agencies and elected officials that are supposed to protect the consumer. And in my opinion they all seem hesitant to listen to what I have to suggest to try and protect the consumer from dealers like Stephen Wade.

So if you would like to do something to help the community not only here but in all 50 States I have a way for you to do so. I am currently trying to get Congressman Stewart, Senator Mike Lee, and Senator Orrin Hatch to introduce legislation to modify the current automobile contract used by most dealers when selling a vehicle. All I would like to see is something similar to the truth in lending document that is now required to simplify financing information. What I would like to see is a document where anything the dealer can make money on i.e. price of car, trade-in value, warranties, and options are displayed in a simple easy to read format that requires a signature from the consumer to verify that they agree with this charge. I feel this would be beneficial to all parties, the consumer can feel that they don’t need a law degree or a magnifying glass to read and understand the contract so they can feel more comfortable about signing the contract, and the dealer can avoid unhappy consumers due to misunderstandings with the contract. The only people that would not like this are the dealers that are using the current contract as a way to take advantage of the consumer.

If you feel what I am suggesting has some merit and would like to see a change to help protect the consumer from dealers that are getting rich and powerful by taking advantage of the consumer. Then what needs to be done is to get our representatives to do what they are elected for and represent us by passing legislation to protect the consumer. I don’t see how anyone could be against this unless as I stated earlier they are afraid to upset a dealer that contributes to them and are afraid to lose that financial backing. Because there is no major cost involved in this suggestion  they can’t use that as an excuse. And I’m sure that anyone that has or will buy a car would love to have this addition no matter what State they live in. So here’s your opportunity to help your fellow consumers and community members by getting in touch with your local representatives and telling them that you want a change. It’s east to do just type in your Congressman’s or Senator’s name on the internet and all of them have a “contact us” option and you just fill in a few boxes i.e. name, address, phone#, and e-mail address and then you can tell them how you feel and what you would like changed. Remember there is strength in numbers so don’t expect the next guy to take care of you the more people that respond the better. Of course if you would rather play hide and seek when signing a contract that’s your choice, but if you just want to throw away an opportunity to save some money. Then why don’t you throw some of that money to a deserving charity instead of a dishonest car dealer.
